Ceramic Conversation Hearts
How adorable are these slab rolled ceramic Valentine's Day conversation heart ornaments? DIY ceramic conversation hearts make Valentine’s Day Decor special and can be uniquely personalized. So cute to hang on a Valentine's tree or just to give to a friend. This is an easy project for beginner potters and ceramicists.
You can also make them bigger and use as coasters for your beverages. Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you enjoy the tutorial. I used a low fire white earthenware clay. I added links below to all the supplies and tools used.
I began by rolling out a slab of low fire earthenware clay to 1/4 inch thickness.
Make sure to poke any air bubbles while rolling.
Smooth and compress with a rib tool. This helps prevent any cracks while drying and firing.
Cut out your hearts with cookie cutters or any heart shaped template of your choice.
Clean up the sides top and back with a damp sponge.
Let the clay dry and stiffen a half hour or so before you begin working with it. It will depend on the humidity where you live. You don't want it so dry or completely leather hard that you can't press in the letter stamps. Nor do you want your clay too wet.
Before I begin stamping my messages on the front I stamp my maker's mark emblem on the back of the heart.
I cut a hole for twine if using as an ornament. Be very careful not to make the hole too close to the top of the heart. The clay will crack if it is toll close and will become a weak breaking point.
Stamp your messages of choice.
Clean up and smooth any unwanted marks or finger irregularities with a damp sponge.
To prevent warping or cracking of your pieces place all your hearts on a wooden board or drywall board and weigh down with another board to let your pieces dry evenly and slowly.
Place on a shelf with air circulation to dry slowly. It will take several days so be patient.
When pieces are completely bone dry you can bisque fire to cone 05.
Glaze your messages and hearts to your creative liking. I did not glaze the back of my hearts. Make sure your glazes are low fire glazes.
Let the glaze dry completely.
Glaze fire in kiln to cone 05.
Finish your heart off with a piece of twine or ribbon.
These are for decoration only. Not food safe.
